Autorul subliniază că scopul acestei cărţi este mai puţin de a dezbate sau de a demonstra, şi mai mult un avocat al speranţei şi al implicării în mărturisirea iubirii lui Dumnezeu în lumea noastră astăzi, stimulând rugăciunea şi acţiunea, reînnoirea minţii şi a inimilor şi reconcilierea diviziunii.

Cartea, publicată și într-o ediție în limba engleză, vorbește despre motivația și semnif­icațiile profunde ale pelerinajului. „Pelerinajul religios este o constantă a umanității. El are moti­vații multiple și semni­ficații spirituale profunde când este trăit intens și înțeles corect. Pelerinii sunt oameni care doresc să viziteze și să venereze locurile sfinte biblice, mormintele martirilor, moaștele sfinților, icoane făcătoare de minuni sau locuri unde trăiesc duhovnici smeriți”, remarcă Patriarhul României încă de la începutul lucrării.

Lucrarea a fost pregătită sub îndrumarea părintelui profesor Dumitru Stăniloae și susținută ca teză de doctorat în teologie la Institutul Teologic Universitar Ortodox din București, în data de 30 octombrie 1980, reprezentând versiunea restructurată și condensată a tezei de doctorat susținută la Universitatea de Științe Umane din Strasbourg, Franța, în 19 iunie 1979 (Facultatea de teologie protestantă).

Deși scrisă la vârsta de 28 de ani, în perioada iulie 1979 – septembrie 1980, cu pasiune și elan tineresc, lucrarea Teologie și spiritualitate conține o bogăție de informații teologice și istorice, fiind actuală mai ales în ceea ce privește tematica și motivația ei.

Volumul cuprinde o culegere de 25 de articole și conferințe, scrise direct în limba franceză sau traduse din limba română, începând cu anul 1978, atunci când autorul studia la Universitatea din Strasbourg și purta numele de Dan Ilie Ciobotea, și până în februarie 2008, la câteva luni de la alegerea sa în demnitatea de Patriarh al Bisericii Ortodoxe Române. Culegerea de texte este precedată de o convorbire cu părintele Hyacinthe Destivelle, directorul Centrului ISTINA și responsabil al colecției în care a fost publicată cartea.

Interviul cuprinde o introducere biografică, în care Patriarhul României vorbește despre familie, studiile în România, Franța și Elveția, formarea sa spirituală și teologică (cu evocarea unor personalități care au marcat pregătirea sa, precum părintele Ilie Cleopa de la Mănăstirea Sihăstria sau părintele profesor Dumitru Stăniloae), diversele funcții deținute în cadrul Bisericii și realizările sale, ca de exemplu consilier patriarhal, apoi Mitropolitul Moldovei și Bucovinei, și, în final, marile direcții ale poziției sale actuale ca Patriarh al Bisericii Ortodoxe Române. Articolele și conferințele publicate în acest volum, grupate în opt rubrici, abordează subiecte dintre cele mai variate din domeniile teologiei, spiritualității și ecleziologiei.

 

Brâncuși – sculptor creștin ortodox,

Cartea evidențiază prezența spiri­tualității creștin-ortodoxe în viața și opera lui Constantin Brâncuși, folosind, într-o formă restructurată și îmbogățită, textul prelegerii „Materia sculptată – epifanie a luminii Creatorului. Spiritualitate ortodoxă în opera lui Brâncuși”, susținută de Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel în data de 14 ianuarie 2006, la Universitatea de Arte „George Enescu” din Iași, după ce i s-a decernat titlul de Doctor Honoris Causa al acestei universități, atunci în calitate de Mitropolit al Moldovei și Bucovinei.

„Dorim ca publicarea acestui text, acum sub un titlu nou: «Brâncuși – sculptor creștin ortodox», să fie în același timp un omagiu pios adus memoriei celebrului sculptor român, de mult timp intrat în lumina marilor artiști ai umanității, și un apel la o cunoaștere mai amplă și mai profundă a semnificațiilor spirituale cuprinse în opera artistică a acestui fiu credincios și înțelept al Bisericii Ortodoxe Române, care a făcut cunoscute la nivel mondial valențe nebănuite ale sufletului românesc”, afirmă Preafericirea Sa în Prefața cărții. Volumul a fost publicat în limbile română, engleză și franceză.

 

Începând cu anul 2009, Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a inaugurat o serie de volume substanțiale menite să condenseze lucrarea Bisericii noastre în societate pe parcursul fiecărui an. Volumele ilustrează prin text, dar și prin multe imagini, bogata și neobosita lucrare misionară, creatoare de valori și demnitate, des­fă­șurată în fruntea Bisericii Ortodoxe Române de către Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel. În paginile fiecărei lucrări sunt reunite textele reprezentative ale Preafericitului Părinte Patriarh Daniel, textele actelor de sfințire, ale pastoralelor sinodale și patriarhale și ale scrisorilor irenice transmise de Preafericirea Sa cu ocazia Învierii și a Nașterii Domnului, ale mesajelor transmise cu diverse ocazii unor personalități sau instituții, ale cuvântărilor rostite în momente importante prilejuite de sărbători sau întâlniri publice, ale condo­lean­țelor transmise oficial, ale prefețelor celor mai importante volume apărute la Editurile Patriarhiei Române și Mitropoliei Munteniei și Dobrogei sau sub egida altor edituri de prestigiu. Totodată, lucrarea ilustrează legăturile tradiționale ale Bisericii Ortodoxe Române cu celelalte Biserici Ortodoxe surori, precum și activitățile de promovare a relațiilor de respect și cooperare inter­creș­­tină și interreligioasă. Mesajele adresate Întâistătătorilor Bisericilor Ortodoxe și cuvântările din cadrul unor simpozioane sau confe­rințe inter­naționale ne arată tuturor grija Preafericitului Părinte Patriarh Daniel pentru comuniune și cooperare, dar și responsabilitatea eclezială a clerului și conștiința misionară a mirenilor, cu scopul intensificării pre­zenței active a Bisericii în societate. Publicarea acestor volume reprezintă rodul unei bune cooperări intersectoriale existente între Cabinetul Patriarhal, Cancelaria Sfântului Sinod, Editurile Patriarhiei Române, Ziarul Lumina, Tipografia Cărților Bisericești și Sectorul Cultural și comu­nicații media al Arhiepiscopiei Bucu­reștilor. Constituind un foarte necesar instrument de lucru și un reper pentru ostenitorii din mass-media bisericească și laică, fiecare volum al acestei serii este util atât pentru clerici și teologi, cât și pentru toți cei interesați să cunoască istoria și spiritualitatea Bisericii Ortodoxe Române.

Ediția a II-a a volumului Daruri de Crăciun – înțelesuri ale sărbătorii Nașterii Domnului reunește cele 24 de pastorale ale Preafericitului Părinte Patriarh Daniel la Marele Praznic al Nașterii Domnului din 1990 și până în 2013. În partea introductivă găsim informații referitoare la istoricul sărbătorii, la modul în care era marcat praznicul de creștinii din vechime, dar și la colinde.

 

Făclii de Înviere – Înțelesuri ale Sfintelor Paști,

Cartea reunește teme ale reflecției și ale vieții creștine, analizate și interpretate în lumina Învierii Domnului. După cuvintele Patriarhului României, expuse în Cuvântul înainte, cele mai multe dintre capitole sunt abordări teologice și pastorale ce concentrează mesajele pastorale trimise cu prilejul sărbătorii Învierii Domnului nostru Iisus Hristos de către Preafericirea Sa, mai cu seamă în anii activității ca Arhiepiscop al Iașilor și Mitropolit al Moldovei și Bucovinei. Expunerea acestor teme este precedată de un detaliat studiu asupra numelui și istoriei sărbătorii pascale, a înțelesurilor ei teologice și a sărbătoririi ei în Biserică. De asemenea, cartea cuprinde o amănunțită explicare a slujbei Învierii, taina Sfintelor Paști fiind pusă în această lucrare în directă legătură cu viața fiecărui creștin, arătându-se astfel că Învierea este biruință a vieții asupra morții, lumină a vindecării și început al învierii noastre.

Volumul este structurat în șapte părți, după cum urmează: 1. Teologia – știința mântuirii și a vieții veșnice; 2. Teologia – știința învierii și a bucuriei; 3. Cartea reunește studii, articole, conferințe, alocuțiuni, prelegeri și mesaje elaborate de-a lungul anilor, unele dintre ele fiind publicate în reviste de specia­litate din țară sau străinătate sau în volume colective. Pentru a-l face mai accesibil cititorilor, textul inițial a fost ușor revizuit, adaptat și actualizat. De asemenea, unele titluri au fost modificate pentru o mai bună coerență tematică a volumului, după cum se precizează în Prefața volumului semnată de Patriarhul României.

Cartea Foame și sete după Dumnezeu. Înțelesul și folosul postului urmărește trei direcții principale: 1) o mai bună cunoaștere a vechimii postului în istoria umanității și în viața Bisericii; 2) o subliniere a importanței postului în pregătirea credincioșilor pentru marile sărbători ale Bisericii, mai ales pentru Sfintele Paști; 3) o redescoperire mai sigură a postului ca izvor de bucurie și de sfințire a vieții creștine.

În același timp, această carte este o călăuză spirituală în urcușul duhovnicesc interior al credincioșilor ortodocși spre lumina Sfintelor Paști, spre bucuria Învierii lui Hristos, întrucât acest urcuș este el însuși înviere sau ridicare a omului din moartea și mormântul păcatului ca existență posesivă și egoistă, pentru a redobândi libertatea de a iubi pe Dumnezeu în rugăciune și pe oameni în fapte bune.

Textele biblice și compozițiile liturgice din perioada Triodului sunt pentru noi izvoare de lumină, iar părinții Bisericii, ca totdeauna, sunt învățătorii noștri pe calea mântuirii. La școala lor, a pocăinței și a sfințeniei, ne cheamă paginile acestei cărți.

 

Evanghelia slavei lui Hristos – Predici la Duminicile de peste an, Ed. Basilica, 2016

Cartea cuprinde predici ale Preafericitului Părinte Daniel, Patriarhul Bisericii Ortodoxe Române, la duminicile de peste an. În predicarea Sfintei Evanghelii a lui Hristos este necesară transmiterea adevărurilor adânci ale textului evanghelic în cuvinte lămuritoare, pe înțelesul poporului. Însuși Domnul Iisus Hristos a comunicat Evanghelia Sa în cuvinte simple, evitând cuvinte complicate sau termeni filosofici pe care i-ar fi înțeles numai o elită de oameni. Prin urmare, și limbajul teologic al predicilor duminicale din acest volum păstrează duhul Evangheliei, în sensul că scopul predicii ca tâlcuire a Evangheliei este de a lumina și a pregăti sufletul pentru comuniunea cu Hristos, nu de a impresiona pe ascultători, a evidențiat Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel în Cuvânt
Înainte.

Fiecare capitol al volumului cuprinde o icoană reprezentativă a Duminicii, textul evanghelic și omilia Preafericitului Părinte Patriarh Daniel. Volumul este împărțit în 57 de capitole.

The author emphasises that the purpose of this book is less to debate or demonstrate, than it is to advocate for hope and involvement in confessing God’s love in today’s world, by stimulating prayer and action, the renewal of minds and hearts and the reconciliation of divisions.

 

Journeying with God – the meaning and value of pilgrimage,

This book, also published in an English version, discusses the profound motivation and ­significances behind pilgrimage. In its initial pages, His Beatitude notes that, „[…] religious pilgrimage represents a constant of humanity. It may stem from a variety of motivations, but when lived intensely and grasped appropriately pilgrimage holds profound spiritual significance. Pilgrims are people who wish to visit and venerate the Biblical holy places, the tombs of martyrs, the relics of saints, wonder-working icons or places inhabited by humble spiritual fathers“.

This work was written under the supervision of Revd Prof Dumitru Staniloae and was presented as a Doctoral Thesis in Theology at the Orthodox Theological Institute of Bucharest on 30 October 1980. This is a condensed and restructured version of the doctoral thesis initially submitted to the University of Human Sciences of Strasbourg, France on 19 June 1979 (Faculty of Protestant Theology). Written between July 1979 and September 1980 when the author was 28, „Theology and Spirituality“ brims with youthful passion and enthusiasm and incorporates a wealth of theological and historical information. Both in terms of its theme and its underlying motivation, this work continues to remain current and relevant to the reader today.

This volume is comprised of 25 articles and papers, written either directly in French or translated from Romanian. Together, these writings span a considerable period of time, the earliest hailing from as far back as 1978, when the author was still a student of the ­University of Strasbourg by the name of Dan Ilie Ciobotea, up until February 2008, a few months after his election as Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. By way of a preface, His ­Beatitude is interviewed by Father ­Hyacinthe Destivelle, Director of the ISTINA Centre and editor of the series of which this volume forms a part. This interview includes a biographical introduction where the Patriarch of Romania speaks about his family, his studies in Romania, France and Switzerland, about his spiritual and theological formation (also evoking personalities who have influenced his education, such as Father Cleopa from the Sihastria Monastery and Father Dumitru Staniloae). He also speaks of the different capacities in which he worked within the Church and his various attainments, starting with his position as Patriarchal Counsellor, then as Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bucovina, and eventually revealing his main aims as Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. The articles and papers published in this book are grouped in eight parts and address a variety of topics from theology and spirituality to ecclesiology.

 

Brâncuși – an Orthodox

This book underscores the presence of Orthodox Christian spirituality in the life and work of artist Constantin Brâncuși. It constitutes a restructured and enhanced version of an earlier paper by the author, „Sculpted matter – epiphany of the Creator’s Light. Orthodox spirituality in Brâncuși’s work“, presented by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel on 14 January 2006 – then as Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bucovina – at the George Enescu University of Arts in Iasi, on the occasion of his being awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa. „We would like this work, now published under a different title – Brâncuși – an Orthodox Christian Sculptor – to be both an homage to the memory of the renowned Romanian sculptor, who has long joined the luminous company of humanity’s greatest artists, but also for it to serve as a plea for a wider and deeper comprehension of the spiritual implications encompassed in the art of this faithful and wise son of the Romanian Orthodox Church, who has made known worldwide some previously unimagined dimensions of the Romanian soul“, writes His Beatitude in the Preface. This volume has been published in Romanian, English and French.

 

From 2009, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel initiated a series which would encapsulate and document the work of our Church for that and each successive year. These editions, produced annually, amply illustrate through text but also through a great many photographic images the rich and tireless missionary work which His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel has carried out as shepherd of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
Within the pages of each volume are collected illustrative texts from His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel’s work, such as proclamations for blessings and consecrations, Synodal and Patriarchal pastoral letters, irenic letters issued by His Beatitude for the feasts of Resurrection and Nativity, messages communicated on various occasions to personalities or institutions. Also included are speeches delivered for major celebrations at feasts or public meetings, official condolence letters, prefaces to prominent volumes issued by the publishing houses of the Romanian Patriarchate and of the Metropolitanate of Muntenia and Dobrudgea, but also by other prestigious publishers.
This series demonstrates the extent to which the Romanian Orthodox Church has maintained traditional links with its sister Orthodox Churches, and similarly highlights its activities and strong commitment to promoting respectful relations of inter-Christian and inter-religious cooperation. His Beatitude’s messages addressed to other Primates of Orthodox Churches and speeches given at international symposiums and conferences consistently reveal his care for communion and cooperation. They also convey his ongoing concern for the ecclesiastic responsibility of the clergy and the missionary awareness of the laity, always with a view to intensifying the Church’s active presence in society. Flames of Resurrection – Meanings of Holy Pascha,

The book gathers together themes of reflection as well as themes related to Christian life, studied and interpreted in the light of our Lord’s Resurrection. As stated by the Patriarch in his Foreword, most of the chapters represent theological and pastoral perspectives which condense the pastoral messages sent by His Beatitude on the feast days of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ – particularly during his years as Archbishop of Iasi and Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bucovina. These thematic expositions are preceded by a detailed study of the name and history of the Paschal festival, of its theological significances and of its celebration within the Church. The book also contains a comprehensive explanation of the service of the Resurrection, and the mystery of the Holy Pascha is seen here in direct connection with the life of every ­Christian, thus demonstrating that the Resurrection signifies the victory of life over death, a light of healing and the beginning of our own resurrection.

In his Preface, His Beatitude notes that the present text has been revised, adapted and brought up-to-date. Also, titles have been modified for greater overall thematic coherence.

„Hunger and thirst for God. The meaning and value of fasting“ explores three main directions: 1. A clearer understanding of the role of fasting within the long history of humanity and the Church; 2. An emphasis on the importance of fasting in the preparation of the faithful for the great feast days of the Church – particularly for Holy Pascha; 3. A firmer rediscovery of fasting as a source of joy and sanctification of Christian life. At the same time, this book constitutes a spiritual guide for the inner spiritual ascent of the Orthodox faithful towards the light of Holy Pascha, towards the joy of Christ’s Resurrection. This ascent itself represents a resurrection or rising of humans from death and from the tomb of sin – seen as possessive and selfish existence – in order to regain their freedom to love God in prayer, and to love their neighbours through good deeds. The biblical texts and the Liturgical compositions used during the period of the Lenten Triodion are for us fountains of light and further proof that the Fathers of the Church remain, as ever, our teachers on our path to salvation. This book contains sermons of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, written for each Sunday throughout the year. Essential in preaching the Holy Gospel of Christ is the communication of the deep realities of the Gospel’s text through illuminating words, easily understood by everybody. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself preached His Gospel in a simple language, avoiding convoluted words or philosophical terms understandable only to an elite. The theological language of the Sunday sermons presented here therefore seeks to retain the spirit of the Scriptures, not forgetting that the purpose of preaching is to explain the Gospel in order to enlighten and prepare the souls of the faithful for their communion with Christ – as His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel emphasises in his Foreword. Each chapter of the volume contains a relevant icon for that Sunday, the corresponding Gospel text and a homily of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel. The book is divided into 57 chapters.
