Sperăm că dialogul, cooperarea și respectul reciproc în raport cu alte Biserici și cu alte culte religioase vor continua, acordând însă o atenție deosebită păstrării dreptei credințe și tuturor valorilor tradiționale ale Ortodoxiei. […] Noi avem dorința și datoria să rămânem statornici în unitatea dreptei credințe. În același timp, considerăm că dragostea față de Ortodoxie nu trebuie exprimată doar în atitudini defensive și în temeri excesive, ci mai ales în faptele lucrării pastorale și misionare concrete, după modelul Sfinților Apostoli, pe care Hristos-Domnul Cel răstignit și înviat nu i-a lăsat încuiați de teamă într-o casă din Ierusalim, ci i-a trimis la propovăduire sau misiune în toată lumea păgână din vremea lor.

 

Sfântul și Marele Sinod din Creta

În perioada 16 – 26 iunie 2016, Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel, împreună cu o delegație a Sfântului Sinod al Bisericii Ortodoxe Române, a participat la lucrările Sfântului și Marelui Sinod al Bisericii Ortodoxe, care s-au desfășurat la Academia Ortodoxă din Chania, Creta.

Patriarhul României a participat sâmbătă, 18 iunie 2016, în Catedrala Mitropolitană „Buna Vestire a Născătoarei de Dumnezeu“ din Kissamos, la Sfânta Liturghie săvârșită de Preafericitul Părinte Teodor al II-lea, Patriarhul Alexandriei și al întregii Africi, în prezența delegațiilor Bisericilor Ortodoxe Autocefale.

În Duminica Pogorârii Sfântului Duh (Rusaliile), Întâistătătorii Bisericilor Ortodoxe Autocefale prezenți în Creta au coliturghisit în Catedrala Mitropolitană „Sfântul Mina“ din Heraklion. La sfârșitul Sfintei Liturghii a fost oficiată Vecernia Rusaliilor, în timpul căreia Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a rostit în limba română una dintre cele șapte rugăciuni de invocare a Duhului Sfânt.

 

În cadrul sesiunii inaugurale a Sfântului și Marelui Sinod al Bisericii Ortodoxe, de luni, 20 iunie 2016, Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a rostit un cuvânt în care a subliniat importanța respectării sinoda­lității nu doar la nivel local, ci și la nivel panortodox. În a doua parte a zilei, a fost analizat primul document intitulat Misiunea Bisericii Ortodoxe în lumea contemporană. În cadrul dezbaterilor asupra folosirii noțiunii de „persoană“ sau „om“, Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a atras atenția că traducerea noțiunilor teologice trebuie să țină seama de particularitățile lingvistice în care este prezentat textul.

Joi, 23 iunie, înainte de ședința în plen, au avut loc lucrările Comitetului pentru Mesaj. Observațiile Preafericitului Părinte Patriarh Daniel făcute în cadrul Sinaxei Întâistătătorilor, care a precedat deschiderea Sfântului și Marelui Sinod, au fost transpuse în text, temele principale fiind grupate în capitole, prin restructurarea lor. S-a convenit ca textul să fie numit Enciclică, deoarece are un conținut care depășește nivelul de mesaj.

Sâmbătă, 25 iunie, la sesiunea finală a Sfântului și Marelui Sinod, Sanctitatea Sa Patriarhul Bartolomeu a apreciat în discursul său implicarea pe tot parcursul lucrărilor a Preafericitului Părinte Patriarh Daniel, care și-a adus contribuția ca un teolog experimentat, experiența Preafericirii Sale privind dialogul teologic internațional fiind dobândită încă de la începutul activității, din perioada în care a predat la Institutul Ecumenic de la Bossey, Geneva (1980-1988).

 

Sâmbătă, 18 iunie 2016, după Sfânta Liturghie a urmat o recepție, la sediul Fundației Tsatsaronakeion a Mitropoliei de Kissamos, în cadrul căreia Patriarhul României și ceilalți Întâistătători ai Bisericilor Ortodoxe au primit titlul de cetățeni de onoare ai orașului Kissamos. Cu acest prilej, Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a rostit un cuvânt de salut, intitulat: „Rugăciune și ospitalitate la Mitropolia de Kissamos, Creta“.

Vineri, 24 iunie 2016, a avut loc ceremonia de decernare a titlurilor de Mari Binefăcători și Prieteni ai Academiei Ortodoxe din Creta Întâistătătorilor Bisericilor Autocefale. Pe lângă mulțumirile adresate conducerii Academiei Ortodoxe, Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a felicitat conducerea acesteia pentru activitățile desfășurate și a transmis cuvinte de
încurajare pentru ceea ce urmează să întreprindă pe viitor.

În seara zilei de sâmbătă, 25 iunie 2016, Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a participat la evenimentul cultural organizat la Muzeul Maritim din Chania, Creta, de către
Ordinul „Sfântul Apostol Andrei“ al Patriarhiei Ecumenice în cinstea membrilor Sfântului și Marelui Sinod al Bisericii Ortodoxe.

Delegația Patriarhiei Române, condusă de Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel, s-a întors la București în seara zilei de duminică, 26 iunie 2016. La finalul rugăciunii de mulțumire din Paraclisul „Sfântul Gheorghe“ al Reședinței Patriarhale, Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a făcut o sinteză a participării delegației Bisericii Ortodoxe Române la Sfântul și Marele Sinod al Bisericii Ortodoxe, adresând un cuvânt explicativ și mărturisitor cu privire la rolul Sfântului și Marelui Sinod și la importanța trăirii și transmiterii dreptei credințe.

 

 

Este foarte important să trăim mai mult coresponsabilitatea. Fiecare creștin trebuie să fie un mărturisitor al credinței, dar cei care au răspundere față de comunități creștine de a le păstori pe drumul mântuirii, aceia nu pot avea atitudine de indiferență, nici delăsare, ci o atitudine de răspundere și responsabilitate din ce în ce mai intensă. (…) Nu e suficient să iubim o Ortodoxie ideală, ci trebuie să arătăm în practică o Ortodoxie reală. Dacă iubim o Ortodoxie ideală, cerească, și nu ne străduim să menținem unitatea și bunul mers al Ortodoxei concrete de astăzi, din țări majoritare ortodoxe sau țări unde creștinii ortodocși sunt minoritari, atunci nu împlinim toată responsabilitatea, dacă nu ne interesăm de viața întregii Ortodoxii, nu doar de viața și activitatea unei Biserici Autocefale locale. Înainte de săvârșirea Sfintei Euharistii, avem pregătirea ei prin Proscomidie, și se vede acolo că nu pomenim doar pe ai noștri, pe sfinții români, ci pe sfinții din toate timpurile și locurile, Biserica lui Hristos Universală. Pentru noi, românii, ca popor latin, deschiderea aceasta spre universal este necesară într-o misiune care trebuie făcută cu smerenie, dar în același timp cu dragoste de Hristos și de Biserică și cu mult respect față de alte etnii, popoare, pentru că știm că Dumnezeu dorește ca tot omul să se mântuiască și să vină la cunoștința adevărului.

În cadrul ședinței solemne a Sfântului Sinod al Bisericii Ortodoxe Române, desfășurată în octombrie 2011, în Aula Magna „Teoctist Patriarhul” a Palatului Patriarhiei, Patriarhul Alexandriei a acordat Patriarhului României cea mai mare distincție din cadrul Patriarhiei Alexandriei, Ordinul „Sfântul Apostol Marcu” în grad de Mare Cruce.

Preafericitul Părinte Teofil al III-lea, Patriarhul Ierusalimului, s-a aflat în România în perioada 24-27 octombrie 2014. Vizita a fost prilejuită de sărbătoarea Sfântului Cuvios Dimitrie cel Nou, Ocrotitorul Bucureștilor, și a avut loc la invitația Preafericitului Părinte Daniel, Patriarhul României.

„Mă consider a fi un ortodox realist, fără teamă de dialog”

 

În perioada 15-21 iulie 2009 a avut loc la Centrul de Conferințe Cité Internationale din Lyon (Franța) a XIII-a Adunare a Conferinței Bisericilor Europene (KEK, aici prescurtată: CBE), având ca temă „Chemați la o singură nădejde în Hristos“. S-au sărbătorit 50 de ani de la înființarea acestui organism, în anul 1959. Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a participat la sesiunea de deschidere a lucrărilor adunării, iar în data de 16 iulie a susținut o alocuțiune cu titlul „Speranța se naște din credință și se manifestă prin iubire“.

După încheierea lucrărilor Sinaxei Întâistătătorilor Bisericilor Ortodoxe Autocefale, din 26 ianuarie 2016, ierarhii au vizitat Institutul Ecumenic de la Bossey, institut la care Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel a fost profesor între anii 1980 și 1988. La rugămintea Sanctității Sale Bartolomeu, Arhiepiscopul Constantinopolului – Noua Romă și Patriarh Ecumenic, Preafericitul Părinte Daniel, Patriarhul României, a vorbit, în cadrul vizitei, în numele tuturor invitaților, la cina din seara zilei de 26 ianuarie 2016, oferită de Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, Secretarul General al Consiliului Mondial al Bisericilor.

 

Mulți tineri ortodocși care au studiat la Institutul Ecumenic de la Bossey în ultimii 60 de ani au devenit episcopi (inclusiv actualul Patriarh Ecumenic Bartolomeu), preoți, profesori și misionari laici ai Bisericilor Ortodoxe. Pentru toate acestea exprimăm recunoștința noastră și dorim ca lucrarea prezentă și viitoare a Institutului de la Bossey să fie una bogată și dinamică pentru binele tuturor Bisericilor.

and inter-religious dialogue

We hope that dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect in relation to other Churches and other religious denominations will continue, while we also continue to pay special attention to safeguarding the Orthodox faith and all the traditional values of Orthodoxy. […] We want and are called to remain steadfast in the unity of the Orthodox faith. At the same time, we believe that the love for Orthodoxy should not be expressed solely by defensive attitudes and excessive fears, but especially by carrying out in practice pastoral and missionary work, following the example of the Holy Apostles. Christ, our
Crucified and Resurrected Lord, did not abandon the Apostles locked for fear in a house in Jerusalem, but sent them out to proclaim the Gospel and to do mission throughout the pagan world of their time.

 

The Holy and Great Synod of Crete

From 16 to 26 June 2016 His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, accompanied by a delegation of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, participated in the working sessions of the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church which took place at the Orthodox Academy of Chania, Crete.

On Saturday, 18 June 2016, together with His Beatitude Theodore II of Alexandria and all Africa, the Patriarch of Romania celebrated the Holy Liturgy in the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annun­ciation of the Theotokos in Kissamos, in the presence of delegations of the Orthodox Autocephalous Churches. On the Sunday of the Pentecost, the Primates of the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches who were present in Crete concelebrated the Holy Liturgy in the Metropolitan Cathedral of „Saint Minas“ in Heraklion. After the Holy Liturgy, they celebrated the Vespers of the Pentecost, during which His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel pronounced in Romanian one of the seven prayers of invocation of the Holy Spirit.

In the course of the inaugural session of the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church, on Monday 20 ­June 2016, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel gave an address underlining the importance of observing synodality, not only locally but also on the pan-Orthodox level. During the afternoon session, the first document ­entitled „The mission of the Orthodox Church in the contemporary world“ was analysed. A point arose during the meeting when a choice between the terms „person“ or „man“ was debated, at which juncture His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel stressed that the translation of theological terms should take into consideration the linguistic particularities in which the text is presented.
On Thursday 23 June, ahead of the plenary meeting, the Drafting Committee for the Message of the Holy and Great Synod assembled for its working session. The comments made by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel during the Synaxis of the Primates – which preceded the opening of the Holy and Great Synod – were transcribed and served as a source for the formulation of the main themes of the document, both by restructuring and by grouping the primary themes into chapters. Moreover, it was agreed, due to the significance of its content, that the text be called an Encyclical.
On Saturday 25 June, at the final session of the Holy and Great Synod, His Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew commended His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel – whose long experience in international theological dialogue goes back to the very beginning of his activity, when he taught for the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey, Geneva (1980-1988) – on his involvement throughout the sessions of the Synod as well as for his contributions as a seasoned theologian.

On Saturday 18 June 2016, the Holy Liturgy was followed by a reception at the head office of the Tsatsaronakeion ­Foundation of the Metropolitanate of Kissamos, during which the Patriarch of Romania and the other Primates of Orthodox Churches received the title of Honorary Citizens of Kissamos. On this occasion, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel gave the opening address entitled „Prayer and hospitality at the Metropolitanate of Kissamos, Crete“.

On Friday 24 June 2016, a ceremony was held at which Primates of the Autocephalous Churches were formally awarded the title „Great Benefactor and Friend of the Orthodox Academy“. In addition to his words of thanks addressed to the leadership of the Orthodox Academy, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel also congratulated the Academy for its work and extended words of encouragement regarding its future undertakings.

On the evening of Saturday 25 June 2016, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel took part in a cultural event organised by the Order of the „Holy Apostle Andrew“ of the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the Maritime Museum of Chania, Crete. This event was held in honour of all of the attendee members of the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church.

The Delegation of the Romanian Patriarchate, led by His ­Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, returned to Bucharest on the evening of Sunday 26 June 2016. At the end of the thanksgiving service, which was held in the Chapel of the „Holy Great Martyr ­George“ at the Patriarchal Residence, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel offered a synopsis of the participation of the Romanian Orthodox Church’s delegation in the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church. His Beatitude gave an instructive address bearing witness to the significance of the Holy and Great Synod and to the importance of living and conveying the Right Faith.

 

It is imperative to live co-responsibility more deeply. Every Christian must be a witness of the faith. However, those who have a responsibility towards Christian communities, who are called to shepherd communities onto the path of salvation, cannot have an indifferent or idle attitude, but rather they must possess an increasingly intensified attitude of duty and responsibility. (…) It is not enough to love an ideal Orthodoxy, we must demonstrate real Orthodoxy in practice. If we love but an ideal, celestial Orthodoxy without striving to maintain the unity and the efficient operation of today’s concrete Orthodoxy, whether in countries where Orthodox Christians represent a majority or where they are a minority, then we do not fulfil our full responsibility. We fall short of our duty if we are not interested in the life of Orthodoxy as a whole but think only of the life and activity of a ­given local Autocephalous Church. We prepare for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist with the Proskomedia. There we see that not only are our own kin commemorated, our own Romanian saints, but that we remember all the saints in all the ages and places, thereby recalling Christ’s Universal Church. For us Romanians, a Latin nation, this openness towards the ­universal is essential in our mission. We are called to perform this mission in both humility and in the love of Christ and of the Church, but at the same time with great respect towards other ethnicities and nations, as we know that God wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4).

 

„More cooperation is required between the Orthodox“

During the solemn session of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, held in October 2011, in the „Patriarch Teoctist“ Aula Magna Hall of the Patriarchal Palace, the Patriarch of Alexandria awarded the Patriarch of Romania the highest distinction of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, the Order of the Holy Apostle Mark with the rank of Grand Cross.

His Beatitude Patriarch John X, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East paying a brotherly visit to the Patriarchate of Romania, on the occasion of the
festivities for the Commemorative Year of the Holy Hierarch Antim of Iveria which marked 300 years since his death as a martyr.

His Beatitude Theophilos III, Patriarch of Jerusalem, whilst on a visit to Romania between 24-27 October 2014 at the invitation of His Beatitude Daniel, the Patriarch of Romania. His visit was occasioned by the
festivities for Saint Demetrios the New, the Protector of Bucharest.

 

„I consider myself to be an Orthodox realist, without fear of dialogue“

During the period 15-21 July 2009, the XIIIth Assembly of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) took place at the Cité Internationale Conference Centre in Lyon (France). The theme of the Assembly was „Called to one hope in Christ“. The meeting also celebrated the 50th anniversary of CEC (established in 1959). His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel participated in the opening session of the Assembly and gave the keynote speech entitled „Hope is born out of faith and manifests itself through love“ on 16 July.

After the conclusion of the Synaxis of the Primates of Autocephalous Orthodox Churches, on 26 January 2016, the Hierarchs visited the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey where His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel was a professor in the years 1980 to 1988. On the same day, at the request of His Holiness Bartholomew, Archbishop of Constantinople-New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch, His Beatitude Daniel gave an address on behalf of those invited to a dinner held by Revd Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches.

 

Many of the young Orthodox people who over the past 60 years studied at the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey have since gone on to become bishops (including the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew), priests, professors and lay missionaries of the Orthodox Churches. For all of this we wish to express our sincerest gratitude and we wish the current and future work of the Institute of Bossey to be as rich and dynamic as ever – to the continuing benefit of all Churches.
