Împlinirile unui deceniu, la ceas aniversar / Celebrating a decade of achievements

La 30 septembrie 2017 se împlinesc 10 ani de când Pronia Dumnezeiască a adus în fruntea Bisericii Ortodoxe Române un ierarh cu o netăgăduită pregătire teologică și intelectuală, cu o impresionantă experiență internațională, încercat în lucrarea pastorală și misionară vreme de 18 ani în fruntea celei mai mari eparhii din țară, ca număr de parohii şi mănăstiri, Arhiepiscopia Iaşilor, cu un palmares de realizări și biruințe vrednice de aprecierea tuturor.

Cei care urmăresc cu drag și obiectivitate viața Bisericii noastre de zi cu zi cunosc împlinirile acestui deceniu cât un secol. S-a vorbit și scris despre ele și se va mai vorbi și scrie și în viitor.

La acest ceas aniversar încerc să creionez câteva aspecte care caracterizează activitatea și viața bisericească în acest prim deceniu al lucrării ca Patriarh a Preafericitului Părinte Daniel.

În primul rând, Patriarhul Daniel a adus în Patriarhia Română ceva de care era mare nevoie: încrederea în oameni, mai ales în cei tineri, chiar cu puțină experiență, dar cu multă energie și pasiune în slujirea Bisericii. Încă de la începutul mandatului său, în Administrația Patriarhală și în cea a Arhiepiscopiei Bucureștilor au fost cooptați oameni tineri, deopotrivă clerici și laici, care împărtășesc aceeași viziune despre rolul Bisericii în societate: acela de a aduce pace și speranță, de a-i inspira pe români în căutarea sensului profund al vieții.

Preafericitul Daniel este omul comunicării și al comuniunii. În primul rând, crede cu tărie în comunicarea din interiorul Bisericii. Îi încurajează mereu pe membrii echipelor administrative de la Patriarhie și Arhiepiscopia Bucureștilor să-și împărtășească unii altora ideile, astfel încât să-și coordoneze proiectele care au elemente comune. În al doilea rând, este un apostol al comunicării mediatice. Televiziunea, radioul și ziarul Bisericii au fost în atenția sa încă de la începutul slujirii patriarhale, iar schimbul de informație și de opinii pe diferitele platforme online a fost mereu încurajat de Preafericirea Sa.

De la Preafericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel am învățat cu toții, episcopi, preoți și mireni care slujim în diferitele slujiri bisericești, că activitatea noastră de zi cu zi face parte dintr-o perspectivă care ne depășește pe fiecare în parte. Lucrarea Bisericii este atât de importantă și de amplă, încât fiecare contribuție personală de voință și acțiune contează foarte mult. Să fii creativ, să fii dedicat, să te gândești mai puțin la binele tău și mai mult la cei pe care îi slujești – iată codul nescris de atitudine al celui care se angajează în administrația bisericească, așa cum ne este el sugerat în fiecare zi din ultimii 10 ani.

În cei 10 ani care au trecut din 2007 până azi, am fost obișnuiți să aplicăm o grilă severă de evaluare a modului cum se distribuie resursele financiare ale Bisericii, atât la nivelul parohiei, cât și la nivelul protoieriilor sau al eparhiilor. Într-o vreme în care sursele sunt în diminuare, iar nevoile par a fi din ce în ce mai mari, fiecare ban a fost cheltuit cu mare grijă, cu o severă selecție a destinației fondurilor și cu o riguroasă verificare a corectitudinii cheltuirii lor. S-a construit mult în acești 10 ani, iar multe fonduri au trebuit să fie direc­ționate către consolidarea infrastructurii. Asta nu a însemnat însă că a fost neglijată investiția sufletească, interesul pentru a ajunge la inimă și la duh.

Dimpotrivă: avem astăzi multă Liturghie în Altar și multă slujire filantropică în spitale și în parohii; avem preoți mulți pentru numeroșii căutători ai celor sfinte; avem activități cu tinerii și copiii și numeroase instituții și programe care se concentrează asupra celor în vârstă. Avem locașuri de cult pentru cei care îl caută pe Dumnezeu, dar ieșim și noi, prin Centrul de Presă al Patriarhiei și printr-o mulțime de programe pastorale și misionare, prin nenumărații preoți care slujesc și sfătuiesc, în căutarea celor care au nevoie de un îndrumare duhovnicească.

Marea provocare a acestor 10 ani a fost să rămânem uniți în fața greutăților văzute și nevăzute. Să ducem lupta noastră cu noi înșine, cu egoismul și individualismul. Au fost multe etape grele, pe care le-am depășit cu rugăciune și în același timp cu acțiune matură. Au fost momente de smerire, în care am simțit că Dumnezeu ne pune la încercare și așteaptă să înmulţim rugăciunea pentru a găsi în noi înşine resurse noi pentru o schimbare în bine. Dar au fost și momente de mare încurajare, când am văzut că lucrarea făcută în numele Preasfintei Treimi aduce roade bogate, când am văzut cum oameni și instituții răspund unor chemări la împreună-lucrare spre binele comun.

Clipa aniversară este un nou prilej de a-I mulțumi lui Dumnezeu pentru toate cele grele și pentru toate cele bune. Știm că împlinirile din viața Bisericii sunt forma prin care Dumnezeu ne spune că ne este aproape și că eforturile noastre nu sunt niciodată inutile, ci sunt întotdeauna absolut necesare, după cum știm că încercările și necazurile sunt îngăduite pentru a ne întări în lupta cu rutina și inerția.

Înțelepciunea poporului nostru ne spune că oamenii aruncă cu pietre în pomii care fac roadă multă și bună. Din cărți am învățat că furtunile își îndreaptă furia de trăsnete și fulgere în cele aflate pe înălțimi. Patriarhul Daniel, rânduit de Dumnezeu să vegheze de pe cea mai înaltă poziție acest edificiu național care este Biserica noastră strămoșească, preia asemenea unui paratrăsnet menit să protejeze întreaga construcție toate valurile de ură pe care forțele întunericului le revarsă împotriva dreptei credințe, împotriva religiei din școală, împotriva construirii de locașuri sfinte, cu precădere împotriva Catedralei Naționale, împotriva prezenței Bisericii în societate. Dar, potrivit logicii supraraționale pe care Scriptura ne-o pune înainte, o luptă inegală nu este întotdeauna câștigată de luptătorul mai puternic. Cel care duce lupta cea dreaptă și și-o asumă cu toată ființa, cel care nu luptă pentru gloria personală și nici pentru un interes egoist, cel care nu-și face calcule strategice meschine, ci simte că poate merge în luptă până la capăt, adică până la jertfă, acela îl poate învinge pe Goliatul răutății.

Îi mulțumim lui Dumnezeu pentru că ne dă forța de a lupta cu duhurile din afară și cu limitele şi neputinţele noastre, cu mari șanse de reușită. Îi mulțumim pentru acești 10 ani de când viața Bisericii Ortodoxe Române este mai dinamică și mai vie ca niciodată şi Îl rugăm să ne fie alături în anii care vin, în fața provocărilor la care este înțelept să ne așteptăm, iar Preafericitului nostru Părinte Patriarh Daniel să-i dăruiască din vistieriile Sale cele bogate viață îndelungată, sănătate deplină, putere de muncă neîmpuținată, aceeași înflăcărată râvnă în lucrarea de jertfelnic Arhipăstor al Bisericii lui Hristos, de bun chivernisitor al Casei Domnului și de atent și delicat Părinte duhovnicesc al Neamului.

Celebrating a decade of achievements

30 September 2017 marks ten years since, by divine providence, the Romanian Orthodox Church was granted a hierarch possessed of an assured theological and intellectual erudition, one with impressive international experience, tried and tested in pastoral and missionary ministry for 18 years as leader of the Archdiocese of Iasi (the largest diocese in the country, based on its number of parishes and monasteries). A hierarch who brought with him an array of notable past accomplishment and triumphs.

Those who, in the true spirit of love and objectivity, have followed the daily life of our Church over the past 10 years know just how much has been achieved in this decade so prolific, it feels like a century. A lot has been said and written about these achievements, and much remains to be said and written about them in the days to come.

On this special anniversary I will attempt to outline some of the aspects that characterise the activity and life of the Church in this first decade of His Beatitude Daniel’s ministry as Patriarch.

First of all, Patriarch Daniel has brought something to the Romanian Patriarchate that was dearly needed: faith in people, particularly in the youth, even in those with little experience, but with a lot of energy and passion in serving the Church. From the very beginning of his service, a lot of young people, both lay and ordained, have been co-opted into the administration of the Patriarchate and of the Bucharest Archdiocese, all of whom shared in the same vision of the Church’s role in society: that of bringing peace and hope, of inspiring other Romanians to seek the profound meaning of life.

His Beatitude Daniel is a person of communication and of communion. Above all else he believes ardently in fostering communication within the Church. He often encourages the administrative staff of the Patriarchate and the Archdiocese to share their ideas with one another, so that they may coordinate their projects based on common elements. Furthermore, he is an apostle of media communication. The television and radio stations as well as the newspaper of the Church have been at the top of the Patriarch’s agenda from the very outset, and His Beatitude has always encouraged the exchange of information and opinion on the various online platforms.

We have all learnt from Patriarch Daniel – bishops, priests and lay people alike, each serving the Church in various capacities – that our daily efforts are part of a grander scheme which goes above and beyond each and every one of us. The work of the Church is so comprehensive and so significant that each personal contribution of will and action is of utmost importance. To be creative, to be devoted, to think less of one’s own well-being and more of those whom you serve – here is the unwritten code of conduct for those who engage in the work of church administration, as advocated on a daily basis throughout these past 10 years.

Over this period, we have been accustomed to applying strict assessment scales when handling the distribution of the Church’s financial resources, both at the parish level and at the level of deaneries and dioceses. In a time when resources are diminishing, and needs seem ever greater, every penny has been expended with great care, with an austere policy of funds allocation and rigorous scrutiny which allows us to accurately monitor how money has been spent. Much has been built during these ten years, and a significant proportion of funds have had to be directed towards consolidation of infrastructure. However, this does not mean that spiritual investment has been neglected, nor indeed the constant underlying quest to touch heart and soul.

Quite the contrary: we now have ever more Liturgy in altars and philanthropic ministry has greatly expanded in hospitals and parishes. We have many priests who are there for those many seekers of a holy life. We organise activities for children and for the young and have established numerous institutions and programmes which specifically address the needs of the elderly. For those who seek God, there are churches, but by the same token, we actively extend our welcome to those who are in need of spiritual guidance, through the Press Centre of the Patriarchate, through an assortment of pastoral and missionary programmes and with the help of those countless priests who minister and teach.

One of the great challenges of these past 10 years has been for us to remain united in the face of all adversities, seen and unseen. To carry on the fight with our own selves, with egotism and individualism. We have encountered many moments of difficulty, which we have managed to overcome through prayer but also through mature action. There have been humbling moments, when we felt that God was testing us, expecting us to multiply our prayers so that we might find within ourselves new resources for improvement. But there have also been moments of great encouragement, when we saw the work performed in the name of the Holy Trinity bringing bounteous fruit, when we saw people and institutions responding to the higher calling to co-operate towards the common good.

This anniversary is a new opportunity for us to thank God for all things, both difficult and good. We know that accomplishments in the life of the Church are the way in which God assures us He remains ever close and that our efforts are never futile, but always completely necessary. We also know that we are granted trials and troubles so that we become strengthened in our constant struggle with routine and apathy.

Our nation’s popular wisdom tells us that sticks and stones are only thrown at fruit-bearing trees. And we have learnt from books that storms cast their fury of thunderbolt and lightning only onto the higher peaks. Patriarch Daniel, ordained by God to oversee from the highest position of this national foundation which is our forefathers’ Church, like a protective lightning rod attracts all waves of hatred spewn by the forces of darkness against the true faith, against religion in schools, against the building of new churches, particularly against the Cathedral of National Salvation, against the Church’s presence in society. But according to the suprarational logic which is advanced by the Scripture, an unequal battle is not always won by the strongest opponent. Those who fight the just fight and assume it with all their being, those who do not fight for personal glory nor for some selfish interest, those who do not scheme and devise mercantile strategies, those who notwithstanding feel that they can go into the battle and persevere up until the very last, even up until self-sacrifice – those are the ones who are able to defeat the Goliaths of evil.

We give thanks to God for giving us the strength to keep the spirits from outside at bay as well as the strength to face our own weaknesses and limitations with such great certitude of victory. We give thanks for these 10 years in which the life of the Romanian Orthodox Church has become more dynamic and more alive than ever. And we pray that He remains by our side in the years to come, in the face of all of the challenges and provocations we are wise to expect. May God, from His bounteous treasuries, grant His Beatitude, our Patriarch Daniel, a long life, good health, enduring strength and ever the same fervent drive in his sacrificial ministry as Arch-Shepherd of the Church of Christ, as able overseer of the House of God and as caring and sensitive Spiritual Father of our Nation.
